Mysore practice (also called self-practice and Mysore-style astanga) is the traditional method of practising astanga vinyasa. Wherever you are in your astanga journey, Mysore-style is generally acknowledged to be the most effective way to practise and is where I recommend you start if you’re a beginner. The name comes from the location of the Shri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute. In a Mysore class, practitioners work through a series (or part of one) at their own pace, and the teacher helps and adjusts people individually. This means I am able to get to know you and your practice well, and can offer assistance specific to you. You receive a thorough grounding in all the basics and are introduced to new postures gradually, as you’re ready for them. There is an assistant
in the class who works specifically with beginners,
so you don’t
need to feel that you’re
holding anyone up or taking too much of the teacher’s
If you have some astanga experience, you work through as much of the series as you can practise with integrity to the form and intention of the postures, and will be introduced to new postures when appropriate. You are not expected to know the whole sequence, or even any of it: Mysore practice is a place to explore and find out rather than to produce a polished performance. If you’ve been doing led classes and are not sure you can remember what comes where, don’t worry; we will help you to learn the series, and you can ask at any time you get stuck. We start where you are and follow you, so that
you can gradually develop your capacity for all the dimensions of practice.
The energy of the group breathing and working together in
a Mysore class is amazing, so motivating yourself is
easy, and with individual attention, students sometimes
find themselves able to move into postures that didnt
seem possible in a led class. If you are
injured and need help to modify, or you have questions
or difficulties with certain postures, Mysore practice
offers the opportunity to explore in depth with the
assistance of an experienced teacher. A Mysore practice can often accommodate people who would not be able to access a led astanga class even at beginner level, because it’s too fast or too demanding, or because there are special circumstances that need particular adaptations.
